Sunderland Bridge, located just south of Durham, gracefully spans the River Wear and dates back to the 18th century. This historic road bridge was once part of the main route between Darlington and Durham before modern bypasses were constructed. Towering behind it is the magnificent Croxdale Railway Viaduct, built in 1872 to carry the East Coast Main Line across the river. With its soaring brick arches, the viaduct is a stunning feat of Victorian engineering and remains a vital part of the UK’s rail network to this day.

Captured in stunning clarity, this aerial photograph frames both bridges amidst the rich greens of the surrounding woodland and the tranquil flow of the River Wear below. The image beautifully contrasts the older stone road bridge in the foreground with the impressive brick viaduct in the distance, perfectly encapsulating the evolution of transport architecture in the North East.
